Success comes in many shapes and sizes, personal and professional. It can be a big moment or a small step. I wrote recently about the importance of celebrating our wins and in this final article of the year I’d like to ask: What will success look like for you in 2022? And how are you making it happen?
As former president Barack Obama reminds us: “Our destiny is not written for us, it’s written by us.” We have to set the goal, create the plan and do the work. It’s not, however, a linear process — there will be unexpected events, unforeseen setbacks along the way. How we respond to these will determine if we are to succeed in our goals.
Success — it’s personal
There are a few ways we tend to measure success—with the material and metric being at the top of the list for most people. Being a good provider, rising up the ranks = success. Then there’s the existential approach which makes the case that meeting one’s personal goals—whether others approve or not—must determine the (subjective) success of one’s life. I think it’s important to craft our own success criteria that reflects our ‘why’—the purpose and driving force behind the goal. When we understand our purpose we have a better understanding of how to achieve it and, importantly, we can recognize it when we get there.
“The way to achieve your own success is to be willing to help somebody else get it first.” ― Iyanla Vanzant
Success — it’s collective
We can achieve more and go further together. So as personal and purpose-driven your success might be, it’s smart to both bring in people to help and give back to others. A rising tide lifts all boats—collective success is catching! This is also a great way to redefine your understanding of success. Your impact and ability to influence change are markers of success that often get overlooked. When you live a life driven by passion and purpose, you focus on significance over material success. This speaks to the legacy you are creating and the difference you are making.
For myself and 2Hill Consulting Services, LLC success in 2022 will reflect our core mission: “To maximize the potential of people to succeed (even in uncertainty)”. One way we’ll be able to help more people do this is through the launch of our ‘Engineered For Purpose’ online program designed specifically to help you discover and harness your purpose to reach your career and life goals. I’m excited to get this out in the world and championing the impact and success of program participants will definitely be on my 2022 highlights reel!
